What is chronic kidney disease in cats?

Chronic kidney disease is a very common chronic disease in cats, and it is also one of the common causes of death in cats. As all cat owners know, cats don't drink much water, they are easily dehydrated, which puts a lot of pressure on the kidneys. Chronic kidney disease is formed when many small kidney injuries gradually accumulate, and kidney function is gradually lost. Chronic kidney disease has a wide range of incidences, and it can occur in all ages, fat cats and thin cats. Therefore, it is very important for cat parents to understand the stages, symptoms, examination and treatment, maintenance, and prevention of chronic kidney disease in advance.

Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats: A Vet Explains

Present Situation

Toru Miyazaki " The Day Cats Live to Be Thirty "

The news that makes me happy that is when I saw a news online recent which reports that, this phenomenon that has plagued the owner for a long time is expected to be resolved in the future. That is a 61-year-old Japanese scientist Toru Miyazaki. After several years of development, he has successfully overcome the problem of cat kidney disease. If all goes well, the new drug will be available as soon as 2025.

While conducting research at the Institute of Immunology in Switzerland in 1995, he discovered a high-concentration protein in human blood and named it AIM (Apoptosis Inhibitor of Macrophage). At first, he did not know that AIM played a role in the body. What role, until one day he found out that his research had a great impact on the treatment of arteriosclerosis and liver, kidney and other organ failures when he uniquely published a paper on the connection between AIM and arteriosclerosis. , dead cells and damaged proteins cannot be excreted from the body well, and if they accumulate too much and accumulate for a long time, they will become unnecessary things and accumulate in the body, but this AIM can clear out the garbage and suppress the risk of disease.

Problem face

In short, the biggest difficulty is the pandemic. A while ago, the research and development process was interrupted due to the epidemic. However, as related news was announced on the Internet, his research quickly attracted the attention of cat owners. Manny cat owners raise 300 million yen for research funds in one go, and everyone is so enthusiastic to help, but there is only one very simple idea, I hope the cat is healthy, even if it is to get along with each other for a minute and a second.

After the start-up funds were obtained, the development process went very smoothly. It is said that the drug has been completed and the progress is in the clinical trial stage, and according to the latest experiments, the drug is really effective! One test cat was diagnosed with only one week of life left , but after injecting the AIM drug, not only did his health improve, he could even walk around on his own. There is also a 23-year-old female cat who has been very weak since she became ill, but after taking medicine for four months, her symptoms have improved greatly! It is even good enough to eat by itself!

Future Vision

As mentioned earlier, as long as this drug goes well, it has a chance to be launched in 2025, and the goal is to circulate it on the market at an affordable price. Miyazaki Toru’s research team also intends to continue to study more functions of AIM, such as the human kidney. The problem is related to Alzheimer's disease, so in the future they will continue to research and develop a treatment method that can treat the human body so that people don't have to worry about kidney dialysis and dementia in the future.

Creative Solutions

Ways to prevent kidney disease in cats.

1. Breeding: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is not an infectious disease. According to the research of Dr. David Biler of Kansas State University in the United States, PKD is a chromosomal dominant genetic disease, so it is relatively easy to track and avoid.

2. Drink more water: Feed them more water a few times a day, if they don’t drink stagnant water, they often turn on the faucet or buy an automatic drinking device for the cat.If they love cleanliness, they need to clean the water bowl every day and replace the water in the bowl in time There are still a few who are picky about bowls and places to drink water, and you can find the ones that cats like through continuous experimentation.

You can also eat canned cat food (canned food contains 80% water) several times a week to supplement nutrition and water. At the same time, it can satisfy the cat’s greed and shorten the distance between the cat and its owner.

3. Choose Cat Food Carefully: When choosing cat food, pay attention to the content of the ingredients on the package. The content of sodium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, etc. should not be too high, and the protein should be moderate.

Justification and Implementation:

1.Breeding: If one parent has a single PKD gene and the other has no PKD gene, the resulting kittens have a 50% chance of being affected. If both parents have a single PKD gene, the kitten bred has a 75% prevalence rate; if one parent has a double copy of the PKD gene, the offspring are 100% regardless of the other genotype prevalence. Because the genetic mechanism of the PKD gene is relatively clear, the disease can be completely avoided by formulating a scientific and reasonable breeding plan.

2.Drink more water: : Cats with CKD are more prone to dehydration (due to a decreased ability of the kidneys to retain water). Therefore, maintaining a good fluid intake is very important and may help slow the progression of chronic kidney disease. Since cats get a lot of water from food, cats with CKD should eat canned (or bagged) food rather than dry food whenever possible.

3. Choose Cat Food Carefully:

low phosphorus content :Restricting the amount of phosphate in the diet appears to be very beneficial in protecting the kidneys from further damage in cats with CKD. While dietary protein restriction helps maintain quality of life, phosphate restriction appears to prolong lifespan in cats with CKD.

Reflection

As an owner of two cats and one dog, it is really a great news for me to know that the diseases can be treat in the no longer future. Besides, all of my pets were adopted so it is hard to tell that did their family genes have bring along diseases that may cause them sick when they getting older. It is also every owners' wish that their pets can stay with us longer till the end of their life. Just because their lives are short, we need to pay more attention to their health.

Pet medication in Malaysia

In my hometown, there are only 2 vets in the area. The number of pet grooming shops is even more than the number of the vets. Some of the elderly did not have the concern to bring their pet to vet when they are sick. The medical check for pets is a must every year so as humans. Hence, I hope that pet healthcare and medication can become a common thing among Malaysia citizens. Please take your pets to see a vet when they are sick!
